What is Compounding?
Compounding combines an ageless art with the latest medical knowledge and state-of-the-art technology, enabling specially trained professionals to prepare customized dosage forms that are just what the patient needs.
Some Examples of Compounding:
If a patient is unable to swallow medications, numerous options exist. We can compound the required active ingredient(s) into a variety of different dosage forms; a transdermanal gel/cream that allows the medication to be absorbed through the skin. Troches, where the end device is placed between the cheek & gum for absorption through the blood vessels in the gum area. Other choices include suppositories, lozenges, lip balms, freezer pops, lollipops, etc. The consumable dosage forms are available with a variety of flavors (currently over 100 different choices).
When a Pharmaceutical Drug company determines a specific product is no longer producing the requisite amount of profit (or is temporarily unavailable or out of stock) they have the option of dropping it from their list of products being offered (temporarily or permanently). As a Compounding Pharmacy, where we work with the active ingredients at the chemical level, we can typically obtain the active ingredients and compound it into a suitable preparation.
- Change in Route of Administration
Most medications are commercially available in limited forms (an injectible, a liquid, one or two strengths, etc). As a Compounding Pharmacy we can easily compound the active ingredient(s) into a form that is easier or simpler to administer (a capsule vs. a shot, a grape flavored gummy bear vs. a bitter liquid, etc.) or a strength that is more appropriate for the patient.
As each individual is different, and has different tolerences and preferances it is not unusual for a patient to not be able to tolerate a bitter liquid, or a sickly sweet suspension, maybe a pill that has a 'really bad' odor. We offer in excess of 100 different flavors (Margaritta, Pina Coloda, Fruit Punch, Grape, Bubble Gum, etc.) and can typically produce a prescription that is quite palatable for all of our patients!
Why Compounding?
Today medications are becoming patient driven, "ask your Doctor if this "name the drug" is right for you?" Pharmaceutical Companies are investing millions of dollars in patient advertising. The problem is the commercially available medications are not meeting all of the patient healthcare needs, (have you noticed the list of unpleasant side affects?) and the public is thirsty for some solutions!
How Can Compounding Help Me?
Commercially available medications are formulated, patented, and marketed to help most of the people, most of the time. Compounded prescriptions are customized for a particular person. We fit the medication to the patient, not the other way around.
