Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a prescription for a compounded formulation?

Yes, a prescription is required, both for general compounded formulations, and for Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy.

What types of doctors prescribe compounded medications?

All medical doctors (M.D. and D.O.), nurse practitioners, veterinarians, and dentists may prescribe compounded medications.

Why did my doctor prescribe a compounded medication?

The medication that your doctor prescribed may only be commercially available in a different dosage form or strength than what you need, or the medication may no longer be commercially available for you to get at a retail pharmacy.  Or, your doctor may want more than one medication to be combined into a single dosage form so you don't have to swallow 2 or 3 capsules at a time.

Do you have to have special training for preparing compounded medications?

Our pharmacist and technicians attend special training courses at PCCA in Houston, Texas to ensure that we are up to date with the latest compounding trends to best suit your needs.

What is PCCA?

PCCA is Professional Compounding Centers of America.  It is located in Houston, Texas.  PCCA has doctors, chemists, and pharmacists on staff, who create the thousands of formulas (recipes) that we have access to in order to meet your prescription needs.  They also provide accredited training courses for our pharmacists and technicians to attend.  In other words, PCCA is our "extended staff."

What does the FDA say about compounded medications?

The FDA recognizes compounding as viable and legal.  FDA listed 3 criteria for using pharmaceutical ingredients in compounding:

  • The pharmaceutical ingredient is a component of an FDA approved product.
  • The pharmaceutical ingredient has a USP/NF monograph.
  • The pharmaceutical ingredient is published on a list of ingredients approved for use in compounding.

How much do compounded medications cost and how do I pay for it?

Because you will have a customized formulation, cost will vary based on the type of medication needed and the dosage form.  In most cases, the cost is lower than traditional therapy options.

Your prescription may be covered by your insurance company.  If you are unsure of your insurance policy, you may check with your insurance provider to see if your plan covers compounded prescriptions.  We are contracted with several insurance companies.  If we do not have a contract with your company, we will be happy to help you with a universal claim form for possible reimbursement.

Once you know the price of your medication, you may pay over the phone or in person with cash, check, or a credit card (MasterCard, Visa, or Discover).

Do you accept insurance?

We are contracted with most insurance companies.  Please present your pharmacy insurance card to us when you arrive at the pharmacy.  We will be happy to file your insurance claim for you upon receiving a prescription.  If we do not have a contract with your insurance company, we will be happy to provide a universal claim form for possible reimbursement.

How do I get my prescription order to you?

Your doctor may call your prescription into the pharmacy at:

  • (573) 964-6786

or fax us at:

  • (573) 964-5270

or you may bring the hard copy into the pharmacy.

I do not live in Lake Ozark, or I have a hard to making it to your pharmacy with my schedule.  Do you have other means for me to receive my medication?

We can ship your medications to you either by UPS or US Postal Service.  Please ensure that we have your correct mailing and physical address for shipping purposes.
